Of polarizing filmmakers.

I got this interesting spam post from Ultraelectromagneticblog. It is about a personality test based on polarizing filmmakers.

So, what does this mean? From what I understand, only directors that can work on different genres are valid for this spam. It simply means that they don’t just work on different thriller movies all their lives like Hitchcock.

Though, I still don’t know how the original creator came up with the small list. I added some of my own; hopefully they fall on the list.

From Triumph of Bullshit:

It’s not strange to disagree about movies that are wildly different, and there are surely a few random movies that are very polarizing. What I find most interesting is which movie people consider the best movie from a particular director, as it is usually very telling and polarizing in a different way, so to this point I will propose a new personality test where you reblog your favorite movie from each of these directors:

1. Joel Coen: No Country for Old Men, The Big Lebowski, Fargo, The Hudsucker Proxy, Miller’s Crossing, Raising Arizona, etc

2. Wes Anderson: The Darjeeling Limited, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Royal Tennenbaums, Rushmore, Bottle Rocket, etc

3. Hal Ashby: Being There, Shampoo, Harold and Maude, etc

4. Kevin Smith: Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Dogma, Chasing Amy, Mallrats, Clerks, etc

5. Quentin Tarantino: Grindhouse, Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, etc.

And Kottke:

6. Stanley Kubrick: 2001, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Dr. Strangelove, Lolita, etc.

7. P. T. Anderson: Boogie Nights, Hard Eight, There Will Be Blood, Punch-Drunk Love, Magnolia.

8. Errol Morris: The Thin Blue Line, The Fog of War, Mr. Death, Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, Gates of Heaven, etc.

And my take:

9. Akira Kurosawa: Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Throne Of Blood, High And Low, Ran, Dreams, etc.

10. Mike De Leon: Itim, Kung Mangarap Ka’t Magising, Kakabakaba Ka Ba?, Batch ’81. Sister Stella L, etc.

My list:

1. No Country For Old Men

2. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

3. Being There

4. Dogma

5. Death Proof

6. A Clockwork Orange

7. There Will Be Blood

8. =(

9. Seven Samurai

10. Batch ‘81

So, what does this make me? I chose NCFOM over The Big Lebowski because I didn’t quite get TBL; Life Aquatic is simply amusing; BT because the late great Peter Sellers starred in that film even if I haven’t seen it; Dogma because it is just plain awesome; Death Proof, even though it isn’t Quentin’s best, I liked it; ACO, need I say more?; There Will Be Blood because that’s the only movie I’ve seen so far; I don’t know Errol Morris (kapatid ba sya ni Philip?); SS rocks; and of course Batch 81 for the last one.

I do hope Kurosawa can be considered a polarizing filmmaker. And I was thinking of adding David Lynch too. I’d probably choose Eraserhead.

(kasi favorite band ko sila.)
