Let’s take a break first from this entire hullabaloo. Way back in college, I was able to enjoy a few group games whenever where our group are. In case you have heard of Killer-police and Mafia, here are some instructions and guidelines that might help you.
For KILLER-POLICE:
Materials Needed: A set of playing cards or a pen and something to write on. Be creative (we use tissue/napkin from fastfood if we play in their place).
Preferred number of players: 7 to 10.
Preparations: One piece of paper should be written with police (your choice, it can be P or pulis or Shaider, you can use the any ace card for this one), one piece of paper should be written with killer (again, K or mamamatay-tao or armpit, you can use the king card for this one), one piece of paper should be written with doctor (D or doktor or kwak-kwak, you can use the queen card for this one), one piece of paper should be written with spy (S or spy, you can use the jack card for this one), and the rest (assuming there are seven players, you just need to add three more pieces for this on) should be written with civilian (we usually place here some unfitting occupations such as manggagantyo, manggagahasa, or manggagamit or simply C, you can use any number card for this one).
Objective/s: There are two objectives for this one, either the police capture the killer or the doctor is killed by the killer (u-huh).
Actions made: The doctor has to stick out his/her tongue (or in tagalog, dumila), the killer has to wink (when I say wink, one eye wink only), and the spy should point who is the killer but he/she must be discrete in doing that (you can always be creative when doing this).
How the game is played:
1. All papers should be folded to the point that everything written there should be concealed. Place those folded papers in a container and shake. Let everyone get his or her own folded paper (one each only). If playing cards are available, just shuffle the cards.
2. All players should check their own folded paper/cards. You shouldn’t inform anyone on “whom” you are.
3. The group decides on what time should they begin. They can either start once everybody has taken the folded paper or they can start after shuffling. They can also set simple rules such as minutes for killing, or time the round will end. It all depends on the rules of the group.
4. Once the game starts everyone should do his or her respective duties. The killer usually starts the game by winking on anyone he or she desires (not sexually of course). It is up to the doctor to revive the “killed” person (see action for doctor).
5. The police will just wait and try to catch the killer (they can always do an intellectual guess or a hunch guess on who’s the killer). In case the killer knows and is sure that the killer is this/that person, he/she has to shout, “Caught you!” The role of the spy is to help the police. In case the spy found who the killer is then he/she can make-choochoo to the police.
6. In case the doctor is killed by the killer (gash… so redundant), the person who is doctor should shout, “The doctor is dead”.
The game can be repeated though. We usually do this whenever we are in a restaurant or in a drinking session. This game is quite old and there are different versions for this game.
For MAFIA:
Materials Needed: A set of playing cards or a pen and something to write on. Be creative. Preferred number of players: 8 to 18, one player are put aside as he/she is the arbiter (no… no Starcraft reference here).
Preparations: One piece of paper should be written with police (your choice, it can be P or pulis or Patowla, you can use the any ace card for this one), one piece of paper should be written with Mafia (again, M or Mafia, you can use the king card for this one), and the rest (assuming there are seven players, you just need to add three more pieces for this on) should be written with civilian (we usually place here some unfitting occupations such as maglalatik, magtitinikling, or magandang-tao or simply T for tao, you can use any number card for this one). If somebody receives a paper written with W and asks “Ano yung W?” You have no choice but to restart the game and yell stupid to that player, if you wan to.
Objective/s: There are two objectives for this, either the Mafia or the Police/civilian wins.
Actions made: Honest to goodness honesty.
How the game is played:
1. Before starting the game, give out the folded papers/playing cards to everyone except for the arbiter (the arbiter usually hands out these).
2. Then, the arbiter asks everyone to close his or her eyes. Cheating is not an option here since it will defeat the purpose of the game. If you plan to cheat, better not join and watch Mana Mana (ask William Martinez or Ogie Alcasid if you don’t know this show) instead.
3. The arbiter usually asks the person/s with the Mafia card to open their eyes. The arbiter has the right to do this and he/she has to be informed on who are the Mafia and Police in the group. The arbiter should be alert with everything that’s happening. Then, if he/she’s informed on who are the Mafia, he/she has to inform the Mafia to close their eyes. Then, do the same thing with the person/s who received the Police card/paper.
4. After the arbiter is informed on who is who, he/she asks the Mafia to kill a person. The Mafia person/s will just have to point the person they want to kill. They don’t need to utter a word since they don’t want to inform everybody on who they are.
5. After a person dies (that person will just then have to watch and wait until the round is finished. He/she cannot join during this round though but he/she doesn’t have to close his/her eyes… you get my point), the arbiter asks everyone to open their eyes and tell them who died. Now, the arbiter asks everyone on whom he or she think killed the dead person. During this stage the arbiter has to jot down the number of “votes” for all the person who’s name is mentioned during the course of that certain round (I think magulo na ang explantion ko… hahaha). Those people who has the most number of votes (let’s say the two highest vote getters) will have to defend themselves on why they didn’t kill that person. The arbiter then asks everyone to do a votation. It depends on the arbiter if the votation is for the person being voted out of the game or being saved.
6. After democracy, the arbiter asks everyone again to close his or her eyes, let the mafia kill, and then… if the mafia is finished with the kill for the next victim, the police then has the a part in doing a wild guess on who is the mafia. The arbiter asks the police to point a person whom they think is a mafia. Once the police choose, the arbiter will just have to nod or horizontally nod if they got the person right.
7. Then, everyone opens their eyes again and these will repeat until there are a few players left (three is a good end game number). During the course of the game, the police can be obliterated and you can still continue with the game. The game will just end if there are no mafia left or if the mafia kills everyone.
As I’ve said earlier, the arbiter has the decision on how the game is played throughout. He/she can be subjective. The game has variations though; you can place a maximum of four mafia/police (since there are only four of a kind cards in a playing deck). The number of mafia and police should always be equal.
